Homer “Bud” Appleyard, 92, of Fort Smith, Arkansas passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 in a local nursing home. He was born on October 26, 1924 in Tuscaloosa, AL to Homer and Addie Mae (Burroughs) Appleyard. He was an Army veteran of WWII and was in the 16th Armor Division. He was a retired engineer from OG&E. Bud was an avid tennis player and represented Arkansas in the Senior Olympics. Funeral services are 10:00AM, Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with private burial to follow. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Drusilla, of the home; two daughters, Jeanne Appleyard Pillar and her husband Dan of Fort Smith, AR and Terry Appleyard Post and her husband Chris of Mineral Wells, TX; one son, Alan Appleyard and his wife Tina of Fort Smith, AR: seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Pallbearers are Alan Appleyard, Dan Pillar, Chris Post, Christopher Post, Matthew Appleyard, Brian Pillar, Greg Pillar and Nathan Appleyard. The family will visit with friends from 5-7PM on Friday, September 22nd at the funeral home.

A Life Well Lived by A Woman Well Loved Three weeks late and in the middle of the cold damp night of April 5th, 1927 the third child of Herbert James and Adela Mae (Case) Richards made her grand entrance in Portland-Dorset, England. And 90 years later on April 14th, 2017 at the DECH in Fredericton, while surrounded by family she passed from earth to Heaven thus concluding a beautiful life. As a small child growing up in Portland, England she was a much adored brown eyed, dimple cheeked little girl with long brown wavy hair. Her father lovingly referred to her as 30% pure sugar, 60% stubbornness and 10% mischief and throughout her life, those that knew her well would attest that this recipe was very likely quite accurate though they may sometimes question the low percentage of mischief. In 1945 while studying to become a nursery school nurse, Vivienne attended a local dance and to her parent’s initial displeasure she met a handsome sailor named Raymond Percy Appleyard. And as they both often like to say they were “instantly smitten with one another” and by March 1946 they were married. Together they continued to dance their way through a beautiful long life and a marriage spanning 65 years and filled with great adventures. One of the first major adventures involved setting sail from London to Canada with “nothing but 2 cases and 200 quid” between them with a goal of starting a new life on their own. Allegra E. Appleyard, 101, of South Haven, passed away at the Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation Community on Tuesday, September 9, 2014. She was born February 7, 1913 to Frank and Olive (Huffman) Slee in South Haven. She married Richard Appleyard on June 3, 1934 in South Haven. Allegra worked at home as a photo retouch artist for the family photography business. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death along with her parents by her husband – Richard Appleyard; brother – Duane Slee; sister – Alice Dangerfield :- twin sister Donna Slee. Allegra is survived by three sons – Richard (Joretta) Appleyard of Kalamazoo, Edwin (Dorothy) and Michael (Mary Ann) Appleyard both of South Haven; daughter – Rhea (Bruce) Crowley of Danville, KY. Twelve grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren also survive. Private family services will be held with Rev. Jeffrey S. Dick officiating. Contributions may be made in Allegra’s memory to South Haven’s Hospice at Home or the Historical Association of South Haven.
