IT’S 540 IN PROJECT COMMUNITY, HONORING THE CONTRIBUTIONS AND PROUD LEGACY OF BLACK AMERICANS THROUGHOUT THE NATION. JUNETEENTH KICKS OFF ITS ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM AND AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE NEXT WEEK. THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY COMMEMORATES THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES. KNOWN AS SOUTH CAROLINA’S BIGGEST JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION, JUNETEENTH JVL SAYS THEIR EFFORTS EXTEND TO ASSIST VETERANS PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOSTER EDUCATIONAL GROWTH AND TACKLING HEALTH INEQUALITIES BY ORGANIZING WELLNESS EVENTS AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION TO THE MEGA FEST BEING POSTPONED UNTIL 2025, I SPOKE WITH THE FOUNDER, RUBEN HAYES, ABOUT WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS JUNETEENTH COMPARED TO YEARS PAST. SO YEAH, THIS YEAR, UM, WITH HEIGHTENED AWARENESS, WE’RE BRINGING, UH, BILLBOARD BOARDS, UM, DIGITAL MEDIA, SOCIAL MEDIA, RADIO, GUERILLA MARKETING, UM, WE’RE JUST ABOUT DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO GET THE WORD OUT THIS YEAR, AS WELL AS, UM, COLLABORATIONS WITH OUR PARTNERS. UM, JUST, JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE, UM, ARE IMPROVING OUR PRACTICES TO BETTER SERVE OUR COMMUNITY AND JUST GETTING THE INFORMATION OUT THERE. SO PEOPLE KNOW TO SHOW UP THE ROYAL GALA WILL BE DEBUTING THE FREEDOM MARKETPLACE, WHICH WILL SHOWCASE 20 TO 30 DIFFERENT SMALL BUSINESSES. THE ROYAL GALA IS NEXT FRIDAY, JUNE 14TH AT THE GREENVILLE CONVENTION CENTER, WHERE THERE’S GOING TO BE A SPECIAL SURPRISE GUEST. Organizers are gearing up to host the Juneteenth event in Greenville.Rueben Hays is the founder of Juneteenth GVL. He said he's very excited to celebrate freedom, as well as the contributions and proud legacy of Black Americans throughout the country and in our area."This year, with heightened awareness, we're bringing billboards, digital media, social media, radio, guerrilla marketing," Hays said. "We're just about doing anything possible to get the word out this year, as well as collaborations with our partners. (We're) just just making sure that we are improving our practices to best serve our community, and just getting the information out there, so people know to show up."Last year, Juneteenth GVL responded after a series of banners were set up in Downtown Greenville to promote the upcoming events. Juneteenth GVL says they made the decision to postpone the MegaFest until 2025.The Royal Gala will be debuting The Freedom Market Place on Friday, June 14, which will showcase 20 to 30 different small businesses at the Greenville Convention Center. Organizers say there will be a surprise guest there as well.Mr. and Miss Juneteenth will be crowned and awarded scholarship money to further their education.Lineup of events here.
