Billy Gilmour’s first start and there was a degree more composure for Scotland as a result. Here’s what the Brighton midfielder just told BBC Sport:

💬 “We gave everything out there and this puts us in a good place… We’re a good team. We know our strengths. The first game, Germany were a tough opponents and tonight, we put everything into that. You could see that from the lads’ reaction.

“We believed we could do this. We got after the ball, passionate. Everything was there.”

Scotland captain Andy Robertson was happy with his side’s efforts tonight. Here’s what he said just now, speaking to BBC Sport:

💬 “Much more like us. Aggressive. On the front foot. We couldn’t have got off to a better start, and then we make a mistake.

“But (Tony) Ralston was great after that mistake and fair play to him, recovering from that.

“Both sides had their chances. It was an open game. But we’re happier with that performance. We probably could’ve scored but I’m sure they’d say the same thing.

“Sunday is a massive game for us now.”

The Briefing: Shaqiri’s stunner, own goal confusion, Tierney’s agony

To Stuttgart then for Scotland and Hungary — where a winner will likely guarantee passage through to the round of 16.

After being thumped by Germany, Scotland responded in style. But the lead did not last long, after a stunner from Chicago Fire’s Xherdan Shaqiri.

Scotland know a win in Stuttgart will send them through. Switzerland now have four points and only a hammering by Germany could eliminate them.

Our own Jordan Campbell, Patrick Boyland and Jacob Whitehead analyse the action from Cologne.

An effort deserving praise

Scotland are alive and kicking as they head to Stuttgart for the final game, knowing a win against Hungary should send them through to the knockouts for the first time in history.

It’s a tough task but they should take confidence from the way they competed against Switzerland. Front-foot, aggressive pressing, Robertson leading with his constant running, Gilmour getting a foot on the ball and Adams holding it up.

It still feels like Scotland are maybe missing a little bit of magic in the final third but they had their chances, though so did Switzerland.

A much, much better night for Scotland. The Tartan Army can be happy with that effort.

So that’s two of the three rounds done in the opening group of Euro 2024.

The picture is pretty clear and the better your record in finishing third, the more likely you are to remain in Germany for the knockouts.

Still in Scotland's hands

There we go. All eyes for Scotland now head to Sunday’s Group A finale at Stuttgart, when they face Hungary.

Win it and that should be the knockout stages.

And that’s the final whistle. Scotland finish with a bit of pressure but Switzerland clear and the two sides have to settle for a draw.

Switzerland will be happy enough. Scotland are still alive.

Ajanki clears well as Clarke runs the clock

90+1' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Into four added minutes and Akanji does a brilliant job of cleaning the ball from the six-yard box ahead of McTominay, after a nifty header across goal.

Shankland and Christie both came on at the start of added time, for McGinn and Adams — in a move from Steve Clarke that felt very much like winding down the clock.

How has he missed that?!

90' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

What an incredible chance that is. Gorgeous free-kick delivery from Rieder, arrowing into the far post where Amdouni meets it…

And inexplicably, he heads it wide of the near post.

A huge let-off for Scotland.

Final roll of the dice

88' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Two more changes for Switzerland as Stuttgart’s Stergiou and Burnley forward Amdouni get a go, for Widmer and Ndoye respectively.

Sierro has also become the second Swiss booking after a foul on Che Adams.

Into the final minutes we go. Has anyone got a winner left in them?

A second goal disallowed

83' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Embolo skips free, the pass finds him and he fires home… But the celebrations are brief as the offside flag goes up and the VAR check agrees.

That’s the second time an offside — a correct one too — has disallowed a Switzerland goal tonight.

Two developments for Scotland. The lovely man that is Kenny McLean is on, with Gilmour making way.

The second piece of news is that UEFA has officially changed its mind, and rewarded the Scotland goal to Scott McTominay — after originally awarding it as a Fabian Schar own goal.

Ndoye tries to force it

77' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

As the quality continues to elude, Ndoye cuts inside and unleashes a fierce effort that sails miles off target and hits a poor Swiss gent in the crowd, square in the face.

Good news is he looks fine to continue. The fan, that is.

Two more changes for the Swiss

75' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

It’s one Scotland change through injury so far, but Yakin makes a double change to take the Switzerland count up to three.

It’s Fabian Rieder and Vincent Sierro who enter the fray, with Freuler and Vargas making way.

McGinn booked as noise increases

71' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Scotland earn a corner and the decibel levels rise. You can sense the temperature is starting to rise in Cologne Stadium.

The set-piece comes to nothing but we do get another booking, as McGinn arrives so late on Schar he was in danger of getting shown the card in Scotland’s final group game.

McKenna has been on seven minutes and he has now achieved a yellow card for his troubles.

It’s off the ball, but also a pretty clear haul to the ground on Embolo who was threatening to be well away and ready for a through-ball.

So all in all, a pretty alarming threat for Scotland right there.

Hanley hits the post

67' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Akanji takes out McTominay in what looks like a ‘that’s for beating us at Wembley’ challenge. One for the Manchester purists, right there.

The resulting free-kick from Robertson is a beauty and Hanley heads it plush against the upright, and out to safety.

So close for Scotland.

It's Embolo time

63' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Switzerland also made their first change just before Tierney’s withdrawal, by taking off their goalscorer.

Xherdan Shaqiri makes way and on comes Breel Embolo, who’s more than capable of winning this for Switzerland.

61' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Oh, this is desperate for Kieran Tierney. In trying to handle Ndoye there, he goes to grab his hamstring and doesn’t get up again.

The defender is stretchered off and that looks like a nasty one.

Scott McKenna comes on in Tierney’s place.

Big chance for Ndoye

58' Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Wow, what a chance. Hendry’s ball up the right flank soon comes back and Ndoye beats Tierney before firing on goal.

He looks certain to score, but drifts wide — and I reckon from the replays, it’s a great save from Gunn to push it wide.
